Traveling With Pets
We'll take good care of your best friend. Read on.
Pets in the Cabin
Your small pet is welcome to be carried onboard the aircraft. If you would like to take your pet on your next trip, there are few things you need to know.
- A one-way, directional fee of $75 will be assessed at check-in.
- Only certain animals are allowed in the cabin.
- Domesticated dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, or small household birds on flights within the United States.
- Domesticated dogs and cats only may be carried to or from international destinations.
- There are some things you need to do before ever arriving at the airport:
- Make arrangements for complying with applicable laws, customs and other governmental regulations, requirements or restrictions of the country, state or territory to which the animal is being transported. This is your responsibility.
- Obtain required health documents as described below under health and wellness.
- Make advance reservations as no more than ten pet containers will be accepted per flight and no more than one pet container may be carried per person.
- Due to limited space in the cabin, if you are bringing on a pet container, then you may only carry a personal item. No other carry-on baggage is allowed, as the pet container is the carry-on baggage.
- The travel container must be large enough for the pet to stand, turn around, and lie down in a natural position and fit underneath the seat in front of you. There may be certain seats which cannot accommodate your pet container, but we'll work with you to get a seat assignment that works. Maximum dimensions are based on aircraft type:
- Airbus A318/A319/A320: 24" length x 15. 5" width x 10" height.
- Embraer E190: 18" length x 13.5" width x 10" height.
- Embraer E135/E140/E145: 17" length x 12" width x 10" height.
- Bombardier Q400: 17" length x 15.5" width x 12.4" height.
- Up to two (2) small animals may be transported in one travel container as follows: puppies or kittens (8-10 weeks old), hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, and small household birds.
- For safety reasons, the pet must remain in the travel container at all times. If your pet is disruptive, you must soothe him/her without taking him from the pet container.
- We recommend that pets have food or water within four hours of departure. We ask that you do not provide food or water to your pet while traveling on the aircraft. The stress of traveling, the motion of the aircraft, and other factors could make your pet uncomfortable.
- No oxygen will be administered to a pet in the event of an emergency.
Pets Checked as Baggage
Your pet will be handled with great care and will be treated as one of the family. For their safety, pets must travel in an approved travel container as follows:
- One dog or cat per travel container if the animal is over six months old
- Limit of two puppies or kittens per travel container, as long as they:
- Are from the same litter
- Are between the ages of eight weeks and six months
- Weigh less than 20 pounds each
We charge a fee of $150 each direction per kennel, so please make sure to give yourself extra time for checking in. You'll need to pay this fee at the ticket counter when you check in.
For the ease of your travel, when transporting your pet, please follow the guidelines below:
- Make advanced reservations on the phone. Pets can't be booked online, so please call our Reservations Department at 800-432-1FLY (1359) so we can ensure availability and reserve space for your pet.
- Your pet must be harmless, inoffensive, odorless and require no attention during transit.
- You must make arrangements and assume full responsibility for complying with any applicable laws, customs and government regulations or restrictions of the country, state or territory to which your pet is being transported.
- Health information is required. See health and wellness.
Sorry, but we won't accept:
- pets requiring transfer to another carrier except flights operated by Great Lakes Airlines
- pets on charter flights
- unaccompanied pets
- reptiles, amphibians, insects or arachnids/spiders
Please be aware that certain flights operated by our codeshare partners - including Great Lakes Airlines - may not accept live animals checked as baggage. Please call our Reservations Department at 800-432-1FLY (1359) to make sure the flight you're traveling on can accommodate pets.
Weather Matters
To protect your pet's health and well-being, temperature restrictions have been established to ensure your pet isn't exposed to extreme heat or cold. It's not safe to transport your pet if the forecasted temperature in any city on your itinerary is below 45°F (including the wind chill factor) or above 85°F. If the temperature is outside these limits, we can't transport your pet unless you get a Certificate of Acclimation signed by your veterinarian. The Certificate of Acclimation must include:
- A statement by the veterinarian that, to the best of his or her knowledge, the animal is acclimated to air temperatures below 45°F (including the wind chill factor) or above 85°F
- A statement by the veterinarian giving a minimum and maximum temperature your pet can safely withstand when traveling
- The statement must be signed by the veterinarian dated no more than 10 days prior to the originating departure
There is a bottom line, please know that even with a Certificate of Acclimation, we can't accept your pet when the temperature is below 10°F (including the wind chill factor) or above 95°F. We stand by this rule because we love pets as much as you do and don't want to see any harm come to them. Please make sure to keep weather in mind when planning a trip with your pet.
Pet Embargoes
Because
"weather matters", the outside temperature must be within the range to keep our pets safe. Some cities require a permanent embargo for pet travel during the summer months. The following cities cannot transport pets during the months of June, July, August, and September:
Between the hours of Noon and 8 p.m.
- Atlanta
- Ft. Lauderdale
- Houston
- Orlando
All Day
- Ft. Myers
- Las Vegas
- Phoenix
- San Antonio

There are also day of departure embargos at select cities when the temperatures are just too low or too high. Please call our Reservations Department at 800-432-1FLY (1359) if you have any questions.
Animal Containers
For the comfort of your pet and for us to accept him or her, please follow the guidelines below when selecting a travel container:
- Only one animal may be in a travel container. Exception: One container may accommodate up to two puppies or kittens from the same litter, between the ages of 8 weeks and 6 months, and weigh less than 20 lbs each.
- Containers must be leak-proof.
- The container must be ventilated on at least two sides and must prevent any part of the animal from protruding outside of the container.
- The container must be constructed of metal, wood, polyethylene plastic or a composite material of similar strength, and have absorbent material on the bottom. For your pet's safety, we cannot accept wire cages or folding/collapsible (including soft-sided) containers for pet transport.
- Food and water dishes must be securely attached inside the travel container and placed so that they can be filled from the outside without opening the door.
- The container must be large enough to allow your pet to stand up, turn around, and lie down in a natural position.
- The door must latch securely and prevent escape of the pet under normal handling.
- The container must have handles or adequate devices which support the full weight of the travel container and pet.
- Containers must be labeled with stickers or markings when checking a pet as baggage as follows:
- "Live Animals"
- Orientation arrows indicating the correct upright position of the container
- Passenger's name, address and telephone number (may be attached to the handle)
- All travel containers are subject to inspection and approval by Frontier.
- Please keep in mind that we don't stock or sell kennels so, for "pet's sake" come prepared.

Health and Wellness
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulates the transport of pets within the U.S. While Frontier does not require a health certificate for carried-on or checked pets traveling within the U.S., upon arrival, the certificate may be required by the state. For clarification, please call your veterinarian or see the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Services.
A health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian is necessary when shipping your pet:
- As cargo.
- To a foreign destination.
For travel within the U.S., the health certificate must:
- Be dated within 10 days of outbound travel for itineraries wholly within the U.S. You can use the same certificate for a return flight.
- Include:
- Name and address of the owner.
- Animal species.
- Country of origin/destination.
- Unexpired immunization against rabies for dogs and cats.
NOTE: Puppies and kittens under 3 months of age do not require proof of rabies as stated above; however, they do require a health certificate stating the pet is in good health.
For international travel, Frontier only accepts dogs and cats. Each country may have vaccination requirements beyond the requirements listed here. Consulates can provide more information regarding other diseases for which your pet must be vaccinated. The heath certificate must:
- Be dated based on entry into the country:
- Dated within 10 days of entry into the U.S.
- Dated within two weeks of entry into Costa Rica.
- Dated within 5 days of entry into Mexico.
- Include:
- Name and address of the owner.
- Animal species.
- Country of origin/destination.
- Immunization against rabies within 12 months for.
- Adult pets 3 months of age or older for all destinations except Costa Rica. Costa Rica defines adult pets as 4 months of age and older.
- The immunization must be administered no more than one year and no less than 30 days prior to international travel. If a pet received a rabies booster less than thirty days before an international flight, proof of the prior rabies shot is required
- For travel to and from Mexico, the health certificate for dogs and cats must also include:
- A statement the pet is free from parasites and has been treated for parasite prevention.
- Immunization against hepatitis, PIP, and leptospirosis.
Use of Tranquilizers
Most veterinarians advise against sedating pets for travel since the effects of tranquilizers on animals at higher altitudes are unpredictable. The decision to administer a tranquilizer to your pet is between you and your veterinarian.
