Passenger Travel FAQs

What time should I check in for my flight?

Frontier offers a variety of check-in options — online at FrontierAirlines.com, as well as at the airport using self service kiosks, curbside check-in, or our service counters. Regardless of where you check-in, you must do so 30 minutes before your departure for domestic flights and 60 minutes before departure for international flights.  Please be at the gate and ready to board no later than 10 minutes before departure. We recommend arriving at the airport two hours or more in advance of your flight.

If you are checking bags, you must be at the airport check-in counter no later than 30 minutes before your departure for domestic flights and 60 minutes before departure for international flights. Please note the following airports have exceptions to the 30 minute check-in cutoff for domestic travel:

Atlanta (ATL) 45 30
Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW) 45 30
Denver (DEN) 45 30
Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) 45 30

Tampa (TPA)

When do I need to be at the gate?

We recommend being at the gate well ahead of your flight. We usually begin boarding about 30 to 35 minutes before departure time. In any case, you must be at the gate ready to board 10 minutes prior to scheduled departure or your reservation may be cancelled and your seats may be released to other passengers.

Effective February 1, 2012, Frontier has implemented Zone Boarding to simplify the announcements at our gates and to speed up the boarding process. When we board a flight, we board in the following order:

  1. Passengers with Special Needs — including anyone needing wheelchair or other boarding assistance and unaccompanied minors. For discretion, no announcement will be made for special needs boarding. If you require assistance with boarding, please check-in with the Frontier agent when you arrive at the gate so that they know you desire to board first.
  2. Priority Boarding and Zone 1 — offered to Ascent and Summit level members of Frontier's EarlyReturns frequent flyer program, as well as anyone traveling on a Classic Plus ticket. Zone 1 includes passengers who have purchased a seat in STRETCH seating.
  3. Courtesy Boarding — offered to families traveling with small children (under 3 years of age) and any other passengers requiring additional time or assistance with boarding.
  4. Zone 2 — includes passengers seated in Preferred Seating rows behind Stretch and in front of the Exit Row. Preferred Seating rows are available for advance selection by passengers on Classic tickets.
  5. Zone 3 — includes passengers seated in all remaining rows on the aircraft that were not in Zones 1 or 2. Boarding in zone 3 will first be offered to anyone with only carry-on bags or a personal item that can fit under the seat, not requiring space in the overhead bins. Then passengers in Zone 3 who have items requiring space in the overhead bins will be invited to board.

Note: On Frontier Express Aircraft without STRETCH seating, Zone 1 will be for Preferred Seating Rows and Zone 2 will be for all remaining rows.  There will not be a Zone 3.

Do you accommodate passengers with disabilities or who have other special needs?
We take special care to make sure our passengers with special needs can travel safely and comfortably on Frontier. We invite you to review our comprehensive section devoted to special needs passengers.

We're guided by the requirements issued by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) regulation 14 C.F.R. Part 382; and we must make sure the carriage of such passengers doesn't impair the safety of the flight or violate Federal Aviation regulations. We can't provide certain extensive inflight services such as feeding assistance, assistance with lavatory functions, or provision of medical services; when these services are needed, we recommend that a personal care assistant accompany a passenger.

In some circumstances, we might require a passenger with special needs be accompanied by safety assistant when:
  • The passenger, because of a mental disability, is unable to comprehend or respond appropriately to safety instructions from our employees, including the required safety briefings.
  • The passenger has a mobility impairment so severe that he or she is unable to assist in his or her own evacuation of the aircraft.
  • The passenger has both severe hearing and vision impairments, to the point that it prevents our employees from adequately communicating the required safety briefings.

How should I handle traveling with a wheelchair?
We'll accept one passenger's wheelchair in the cabin on Airbus aircraft in a priority stowage space on a first-come, first-served basis upon check-in at the airport. The wheelchair cannot exceed a height of 40 inches, a length of 50 inches, or a width of 13 inches, and must weigh no more than 70 pounds. The wheelchair can be accepted if it can be folded or collapsed to meet these dimensions.

When making your reservations, please make a request for the wheelchair to be stowed onboard. In addition, please notify our agents at the ticket counter at the time of check-in, and upon arrival at the gate area, so we can make sure the wheelchair stowage space hasn't already been assigned to another special needs passenger.

To learn more about traveling with disabilities, please feel free to visit the DOT website at www.dot.gov

I have a peanut allergy. Can Frontier provide a peanut free environment?
At Frontier, our concern is for the health and safety of all those who choose to travel with us, including passengers with peanut allergies. Therefore, we do not serve peanuts on our flights. "Tree nuts", such as almonds, cashews, and walnuts, may be served in the snacks available on Frontier flights. Some snack and fresh food offerings we offer may have been packaged in facilities that process peanuts. Additionally, other customers may bring peanuts on board. Accordingly, we cannot guarantee our aircraft and our snack offerings will be 100% "peanut-free". We encourage customers who are allergic to peanuts to bring your own food items on your flight. Prior to making travel plans with Frontier, we urge you to speak with your health professional regarding risks of onboard exposure to any allergen.

Does Frontier offer First Class?
We like to think that we treat every passenger like a First Class traveler. However, to keep our fares affordable we offer only one class of service. However, Frontier does offer STRETCH seating with up to 5 additional inches of legroom. Subject to availability, an upgrade to STRETCH seating is included with the purchase of a Classic Plus ticket. For Classic and Economy tickets, upgrades to STRETCH seating may be purchased at the time of booking on FrontierAirlines.com or at the time of check-in. STRETCH seating is not available on Frontier Express flights.

Will I be able to use my laptop or cell phone onboard?
Welcome to the 21st Century! We're lucky to have all sorts of electronic equipment to help us communicate and keep us entertained. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has some rules that we need to stick to, as some electronic devices may interfere with our ground-to-pilot communication. All electronic devices must be stowed for taxi, take-off, and landing. Certain portable electronic devices (AM/FM radios, TV receivers, remote toys) cannot be used onboard the aircraft at any time. Devices such as laptops, CD players, PDAs, MP3 players, and DVD players may be used onboard the aircraft once the flight attendant has announced that it is permissible to use them. Please read the next question for our suggested alternatives to passing the time onboard.

Cell phones must be turned off once the main cabin door has been shut on all flights. They may only be used at the arrival location once the flight attendants have announced it is safe to use them. Some multi-purpose phones (like iPhone) may be used in flight if it is switched to the "airplane safe" mode; but, no calls may be made.

What do you offer in terms of inflight entertainment?
We're very entertaining. On our Airbus aircraft only, you can take advantage of our DIRECTV® service*pay-per-view movies and Disney programming* all right in front of you on your personal viewing monitor. We also provide each passenger with a complimentary copy of our inflight magazine, WILD Blue Yonder. The magazine has feature articles, games for kids and helpful information for all. Bottom line is: we'll do what we can to make time fly enjoyably!

Will there be any food and drinks served on my flight?
All flights offer a free beverage service when flight time permits, as well as some alcoholic and premium beverages for sale.  On all flights over 200 miles departing after 10 a.m., we offer complimentary chocolate chip cookies.  Throughout the day, we offer snacks available for purchase on all flights over 200 miles and fresh food choices available for purchase on all flights over 700 miles.  For details on our inflight catering service, click here.

Do you charge for beer?
Premium Beverages, including beer, wine, and liquor, may be purchased on Frontier and Frontier Express flights from $5 to $10 — see our Inflight Catering service guide for details. Our Summit Level passengers receive free Premium Beverages on our planes. In addition, passengers who purchase a Classic Plus ticket get one free Premium Beverage on flights over 200 miles.

What forms of payment do you accept for inflight purchases?
We accept credit cards only as payment for inflight purchases on all Frontier and Frontier Express aircraft. Use of your Frontier Airlines MasterCard® or any other major credit card or debit card is accepted.

How old can my daughter be before she needs a ticket?
We know you want to hold on to that baby as long as possible, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has rules, and we must abide by them.

An infant is allowed to travel free of charge on the lap of an adult until he or she reaches his or her second birthday. Passengers with two lap children can't sit in the same side of a row, because there are only four oxygen masks per each row of three seats. Only one infant per paying adult is allowed to travel as a lap child. If one adult is traveling with two infants, the first infant may travel as a lap child but the second infant requires a purchased seat. Infants in his or her own seat require an approved car seat, which must have an FAA red label stating the following: "This restraint device is approved for motor vehicle and aircraft use."

Please visit our section devoted to traveling with children for more information.

Can I bring a stroller on the plane?
Strollers may be used to transport your child to the gate and then must be gate checked in the departing city. The stroller will be returned to the gate at your final destination.

My 11-year-old daughter wants to visit her aunt in San Francisco. What is the procedure for unaccompanied minors?
It's quite an adventure for a young person to travel on his or her own. We'll be there every step of the way to make sure he or she has a great experience. On flights operated by Frontier or Frontier Express, we consider children from ages five to 14 to be unaccompanied minors when traveling without a companion of at least 15 years of age. We charge a fee for unaccompanied minors to cover escort service during the time they are in our care. Children under the age of five cannot travel on Frontier as an unaccomanied minor and must always be accompanied by someone 15 years or older. Children who are age 15 to 17 may also be designated an unaccompanied minor if the parent or guardian requests escort service. For your child's safety, we will only transfer a child to connecting flights operated by Frontier, Frontier Express, or Great Lakes Airlines. Reservations for these young travelers may be booked online for itineraries with only nonstop flights or through our Reservations Department at 800-432-1FLY (1359) for itineraries with connecting flights. For additional details on our policies and fees for unaccompanie dminor travel, please refer to our unaccompanied minors section of the website.

How far in advance should I check in my unaccompanied child?
You'll want to leave yourself plenty of time to get your child checked in and situated, so we recommend that you check your child in at least two hours prior to departure. You'll need to escort your child to the gate and wait until the aircraft has departed the airfield before you leave the area. Once your child is checked in at the gate and it is time for boarding, our representative will escort him or her onboard, assist with any carry-on luggage, as well as introduce him or her to our crew. Your child will receive special attention during the flight and will have a personal escort from the aircraft to the designated pick-up party. In other words, the rock star treatment! At no point, will your child be left alone during the drop-off and pickup points of contact designated in the child's reservation. Another important note, only the person listed on the unaccompanied minor's form as the designated recipient may pick up the child.

Can I bring my dog on the plane? He's really nice... honest.
Your small pet is welcome to be carried onboard the aircraft. If you would like to take your pet on your next trip, there are few things you need to know. For details, please refer to our traveling with pets section of the website.

How do I check in my pet?
If you transport your pet as checked baggage, we'll handle your pet with great care, treating him or her as one of the family. We charge $150 one-way for all sized kennels. For more details and procedures, please visit our complete section on traveling with pets.

I'm pregnant. Do I need to know anything special about traveling with you?
Congratulations! We know you want what's best for that baby, and so do we. Please check with your doctor if you intend to travel during your final weeks of pregnancy. Your doctor should be the one to guide you in your decision to fly. (And in a few months, we hope you'll visit our Traveling with Children section.) If your itinerary contains a flight operated by one of our codeshare partners, check with the operating carrier to see if they have additional requirements.
