TRAVEL TIPS
safety & security
It's safe to assume that our employees have experience with traveling. Here is their "Top Ten" list of tips for traveling safely and securely.
- #10 - Relax. Know that you're in great hands when you fly with us. We're the only airline in the country to receive the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Diamond Award for ten consecutive years (1999 to 2008). The award is the highest given by the FAA and recognizes advanced training for aircraft maintenance professionals.
#9 - If you're planning to travel with a passport, traveler's checks or other important personal documents, make a photocopy of the documents and leave one set with a friend or relative at home and one set hidden in your hotel room, separate from the originals. This way, if you lose any of these papers you can use the photocopy to show the authorities as reference.
#8 - Bring proper identification. You'll be asked for a photo ID when you check in and when you go through the Security checkpoint. Some places will even ask for a second photo ID, so be sure to have something handy. For more information about proper ID, please visit our At the Airport section.
#7 - Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off. This will help you avoid having to untie and retie your shoes at the Security checkpoint. We suggest you wear simple footwear that clearly has no metal in the sole or on the outside. Some airports will allow you to walk through the metal detector without having to take them off.
#6 - Don't be late. Leave yourself plenty of time to get to the airport. You should arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight is scheduled to depart. Allow even more time for international travel, or during peak travel times. Each airport has a check-in cutoff time which must be met. Play it safe and get there early.
#5 - Don't overpack. There are additional charges if your bag is over the 50 pound limit or exceeds 62 linear inches. This policy helps keep our employees safe because it decreases the risk of injury. It also keeps you safe because it makes it easier for us to balance the weight of the plane.
#4 - Avoid wearing a lot of jewelry because it may slow down your trip through Security, as excessive metal will set off the detectors. Also, remember that laptop computers and other electronic devices may take some extra time to clear Security.
NOTE: Passengers with remote control toys may be selected for additional screening by TSA. While not associated with a specific threat at this time, TSA is aware that remote control toys can be used to initiate devices used in terrorist attacks. Accordingly, Transportation Security Officers have trained on this possibility and travelers may encounter additional screening when bringing remote control devices in carry-on baggage.
#3 - Upon arrival at your destination go straight to baggage claim to retrieve your luggage. Make sure to have your claim stub available. Consider attaching something that's easily identifiable on your luggage, such as colored tape or a bright tag. This will lessen the chance of someone picking up your bag by mistake.
#2 - Never leave your bags unattended. Also, never offer to watch a bag for someone you don't know.
...and the #1 tip for traveling safely and securely is...
When in doubt - ASK! Our employees are here to help. There's no such thing as a stupid question. We want your travels to be safe and enjoyable.
