TRAVEL TIPS

traveling with pets

Take a look at our "Top Ten" list of tips and rules for traveling with pets.

#10 - Be sure to offer your pet food and water within four hours of check-in.

#9 - Make your reservations for a pet with our Reservations Department at 800-4321-FLY (800-432-1359), rather than through our website.

#8 - Visit your vet before you travel and make sure all health and pet travel documents are current and compliant with local, state, federal and international entry requirements and regulations.

#7 - Check the weather where you're going. We care greatly about your pet, so we won't accept him or her when the current or forecasted temperature is above 85 degrees or below 45 degrees (including wind chill factor).

#6 - Consult with your veterinarian if you have a pug-nosed pet, as these breeds may experience breathing difficulties during the flight.

#5 - Be sure to clip your pet's nails to protect against hooking on kennel doors.

#4 - If you're traveling with puppies or kittens, remember that they must be at least eight weeks old. Two littermates who are between eight weeks and six months old, weighing no more than 20 pounds each may be shipped in the same kennel, provided it's large enough for them to turn around and stand up in.

#3 - Place identification tags or labels on the pet's collar and the kennel. Include flight information, all important contact names and phone numbers.

#2 - Always talk to your vet about your plans to fly with a pet. Very young or very old animals may not travel well. Never make a decision about tranquilizing your pet without first consulting a doctor.

...and the #1 thing to consider when traveling with a pet is...

Tape a plastic zip bag containing additional food to the top of the kennel. All kennels must be fitted with food and water trays. Remember to include a favorite toy in the kennel to help calm your pet's nerves and make him or her feel less anxious.
