Mexico - when you're there

We want you to have a great time in Mexico, so here are some things to keep in mind. If you travel smartly, we're sure your visit will be terrific!

Protect Your Stomach
Purification systems are different in Mexico and if you're not accustomed to them, eating and drinking certain local foods could make you sick. Drink only bottled water or water that's been boiled for 20 minutes. Beware of ice cubes that may not have been made with purified water. Rule of thumb for fruits and vegetables: If you can't peel it or cook it, don't eat it. Also be mindful about dairy products that aren't pasteurized. If you do indeed get sick, anti-microbial treatments may help, and may be prescribed or purchased over the counter.

Be Smart About Health Insurance
Some remote areas or coastal islands may have few or no medical facilities. Therefore, in addition to medical insurance that you can use in Mexico, consider obtaining insurance or joining a medical assistance program to cover the very high cost of medical evacuation in the event of an accident or serious illness. If you become seriously ill, U.S. consular officers can assist in finding a doctor and in notifying your family and friends about your condition.

Watch Your Stuff
Like anywhere, crime does exist in Mexico, so we urge you to be careful. Don't leave your belongings on the beach while you're swimming. Keep your passport and other valuables on your person or in the hotel safe.

Be Safe in the Water
Don't swim anywhere without a lifeguard present, or if you do, please use extreme caution. Warning flags on the beach should be taken seriously. If black flags are up, don't enter the water. Just use common sense and be careful.
