TRAVEL INFO & SERVICES

checked baggage

Let us handle your stuff. Here are the rules regarding checked baggage.

For tickets purchased on or before June 9, 2008, each ticketed passenger is allowed to check up to two pieces of baggage free of charge.Passengers may check two bags and carry one bag onto the plane. Baggage over the two baggage limit is subject to a $50 excess baggage fee per item. Be sure to read and understand the rules for carry-on baggage.

For tickets purchased on or after June 10, 2008, each ticketed passenger may check one piece of baggage free of charge. A second bag may be checked for a fee of $25.00. All other excess items will be charged an excess baggage fee of $50 per item. Excess baggage fees for international travel differ. Please refer to our international travel section for the excess bag fee schedule for international flights.

For your security, please keep in mind the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screens all checked baggage. Unlocked bags can be examined quickly. Locked bags will be opened if necessary, and then resealed. You can find further information on the TSA website.

That being said, we highly recommend that you do NOT pack the following items in your checked bags:

  • Cash
  • Jewelry
  • Electronics
  • Laptop computers
  • Fragile items
  • Medications
  • Car keys
  • Important documents

size and weight issues

We know it's a weighty issue, but please remember that each of the two pieces you check can't exceed 62 linear inches (length + width + depth) or weigh more than 50 pounds. There is a $50 fee for bags exceeding these weight limitations and a $50 fee for exceeding dimension parameters. Effective June 10, 2008, the fee for exceeding a size or weight limitation will be $75. These fees are charged separately and one item can incur multiple fees. You can read more about baggage in the Contract of Carriage (PDF).

We take the safety of our passengers and employees very seriously. Frankly folks, our employees have to lift and carry these bags to get them to your flight and we'd really like to keep those checked bags under 50 pounds each. And, as much as we'd like to help, we don't accept baggage that weighs more than 100 pounds or exceeds 80 linear inches (length + width + depth). If you need to transport items this large, please check with your favorite package delivery company. Thanks for your understanding of our policy.

early check-in rules

We understand that you might want to leave your bags with us and have more time to hang out before your flight, but you may only check baggage up to four hours prior to flight departure. However, in our smaller cities' ticket counters may not open until two to three hours prior to scheduled departure. Check with our Reservations folks at 800-432-1359 for more information.

Please note that baggage check-in cutoff is 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure for domestic flights and 60 minutes prior to scheduled departure for international flights.

As we mentioned in the checked baggage section, each ticketed passenger is allowed a free baggage allowance. Keep in mind, to avoid incurring additional charges, each item can't exceed 62 linear inches (length + width + depth) and can't exceed a weight of 50 pounds. Many special items have a specific charge or require special packing.
